Summary

CVE-2024-20401 is a vulnerability affecting the content scanning and message filtering features of Cisco Secure Email Gateway. This issue arises due to the software's improper handling of email attachments when file analysis and content filters are activated. An attacker can exploit this weakness by delivering a crafted attachment via email to an unprotected device. By successfully exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker could overwrite any file on the underlying operating system, potentially resulting in adding unauthorized users with root privileges, modifying the device configuration, executing arbitrary code, or causing a denial of service (DoS) condition. Recovery from the DoS state necessitates manual intervention; affected users are advised to contact Cisco's Technical Assistance Center (TAC) for assistance.
