Summary

CVE-2024-4195 is a vulnerability affecting Mattermost versions 9.6.0, 9.5.x before 9.5.3, and 8.1.x before 8.1.12. This issue allows an authenticated attacker, who is a team admin, to promote guests to team admins via crafted HTTP requests. The vulnerability stems from a failure to fully validate role changes in the affected Mattermost versions. This poses a significant risk, as guests, who typically have fewer privileges than team members, can now gain administrative control within the platform if exploited by an attacker. This vulnerability highlights the importance of applying timely software updates and implementing robust access control measures.
