Summary

CVE-2024-28179 is a vulnerability affecting Jupyter Server Proxy, where unauthenticated access to websockets was allowed prior to versions 3.2.3 and 4.1.1. This issue arises from inadequate user authentication checks for proxied websockets. An attacker with network access to a Jupyter server endpoint could exploit this vulnerability and gain unauthenticated remote access to any affected websocket endpoints. In many cases, this leads to arbitrary code execution. Jupyter Server Proxy's own websocket endpoints and projects that do not use websockets are not affected. The vulnerability has been addressed in versions 3.2.3 and 4.1.1.
