Summary

CVE-2024-28101 is a Denial-of-Service (DoS) vulnerability affecting versions 0.9.5 to 1.40.2 of the Apollo Router, a graph router used for federated supergraphs with Apollo Federation. The issue arises due to the router evaluating the `limits.http_max_request_bytes` configuration option after decompressing compressed HTTP payloads. This implies that if an attacker sends highly compressed payloads, the router will experience significant memory consumption during decompression, potentially leading to a DoS condition. Users are advised to upgrade to version 1.40.2, or implement limits on HTTP body upload sizes at proxies or load balancers positioned in front of their router fleet as a mitigation.
