Summary

CVE-2024-24557 is a new vulnerability affecting Moby, an open-source project by Docker for containerization. The classic builder cache system in Moby is susceptible to cache poisoning if an image is built from scratch. An attacker can manipulate this vulnerability by creating a specially crafted image that could be mistakenly considered a valid cache candidate for some build steps. This issue primarily impacts users on version 23.0+ who have explicitly opted out of Buildkit or are using the /build API endpoint. Older versions of Moby could also be affected. Both the Image build API endpoint and ImageBuild function from github.com/docker/docker/client are vulnerable as they use the classic builder by default. Patch releases 24.0.9 and 25.0.2 have address this vulnerability.
