Summary

CVE-2024-23451 is a newly disclosed authorization issue affecting Elasticsearch versions 8.10.0 and below 8.13.0. The vulnerability lies in the API key-based security model of the Remote Cluster Security feature, currently in Beta. Malicious users with valid API keys for remote clusters can exploit this flaw to read arbitrary documents from any index on the remote cluster. This can be accomplished by using the Elasticsearch custom transport protocol and specifying the target index ID, shard ID, and document ID in requests. It is important to note that Elasticsearch REST API endpoints are not impacted by this vulnerability.
