Summary

CVE-2024-22705 is a vulnerability affecting the ksmbd component in Linux kernels prior to version 6.6.10. This issue stems from a mishandling of the relationship between Name data and CreateContexts data in the smb2_get_data_area_len function in fs/smb/server/smb2misc.c. As a result, smb_strndup_from_utf16 can experience an out-of-bounds access. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to arbitrary code execution or denial-of-service conditions. It is essential that affected Linux distributions apply the necessary patches as soon as possible to mitigate the risk.
