Summary

CVE-2024-21626 is a vulnerability affecting runc, a container runtime tool on Linux. In runc versions 1.1.11 and earlier, an internal file descriptor leak has been identified. This issue allows an attacker to manipulate the working directory of a newly-spawned container process, enabling container escapes by gaining access to the host filesystem ("attack 2"). Malicious images can also exploit this vulnerability to grant container processes access to the host filesystem during runtime ("attack 1"). These attacks can potentially lead to further exploits, including the overwriting of semi-arbitrary host binaries, resulting in complete container escapes ("attack 3a" and "attack 3b").Version 1.1.12 of runc includes patches to address this vulnerability.
