Summary

CVE-2024-20697 is a newly disclosed remote code execution vulnerability affecting Windows systems with the Libarchive software installed. The flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a target system by sending a specially crafted archive file via a network connection or through a web download. Successful exploitation could lead to the compromise of the affected system and potentially allow unauthorized access, data theft, or further attacks. Users are strongly advised to apply the upcoming patch from Microsoft or the Libarchive project as soon as it becomes available. Until then, it is recommended to block archive file transfers from untrusted sources and disable automatic downloads of archives in web browsers.
