Summary

CVE-2024-20657 is a newly disclosed vulnerability affecting Windows Group Policy. Hackers can exploit this Elevation of Privilege (EoP) weakness to gain heightened access to a system, potentially compromising the security of the entire network. This issue arises due to the way Group Policy processes applications, allowing an attacker to run a specially crafted program with elevated permissions. Microsoft is working on a patch to address this vulnerability, and it is recommended that users apply the update as soon as it becomes available to protect their systems. Until then, administrators should limit the use of Group Policy to trusted environments and apply the principle of least privilege.
