Summary

CVE-2023-7207 is a newly disclosed vulnerability affecting Debian's cpio utility. This issue involves a path traversal vulnerability, which can be exploited to manipulate file paths and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data. The root cause of this vulnerability is the reversion of patches intended to address a similar issue (CVE-2015-1197) that had unintended consequences. Specifically, the --no-absolute-filenames option, which was supposed to prevent absolute filenames, regressed and instead enabled them. Upstream has since released a proper fix for the issue.
