Summary

CVE-2023-6994 is a critical vulnerability affecting the List category posts plugin for WordPress. This issue allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level or higher permissions to inject malicious scripts through the 'catlist' shortcode in all versions up to 0.89.3. The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes, enabling attackers to store and execute cross-site scripts. As a result, whenever a user accesses an injected page, the injected scripts will be executed. This poses a significant risk to WordPress sites using this plugin and underscores the importance of regularly updating WordPress plugins to mitigate known vulnerabilities.
