Summary

CVE-2023-6986 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the EmbedPress plugin for WordPress, versions up to 3.9.5. The issue arises from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes in the plugin's embed_oembed_html shortcode. Consequently, authenticated attackers with contributor-level access and above can inject arbitrary web scripts, which will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to a range of attacks, including data theft, unauthorized account access, and malware distribution. WordPress users are advised to update their EmbedPress plugin to the latest version as soon as possible to mitigate this risk.
