Summary

CVE-2023-6245 is a Denial of Service vulnerability affecting the Candid library. The issue arises when parsing a specially crafted payload with an 'empty' data type, which the library incorrectly categorizes as a recoverable error. This misclassification leads to an infinite decoding loop, causing the canister to run indefinitely and eventually trap due to reaching the maximum instruction limit per execution round. Canisters using affected versions of the Candid library are susceptible to denial of service attacks, resulting in degraded performance upon repeated exposure to the malicious payload. It is important to note that canisters written in Motoko are not affected by this vulnerability.
