Summary

CVE-2023-4838 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the Simple Download Counter plugin for WordPress. This issue was discovered in versions up to and including 1.6. The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes 'before' and 'after' in the plugin's shortcodes. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level permissions or higher can exploit this flaw to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These scripts will execute every time an injected page is accessed. The impact of this vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or website defacement.
