Summary

CVE-2023-47640 affects DataHub, an open-source metadata platform, where sessions are signed using a SHA-1 HMAC with a shorter-than-recommended key length. This vulnerability allows an attacker, who has obtained a session token, to crack the signing key and generate privileged session cookies. Default configurations of DataHub's Play LegacyCookiesModule utilize SHA1 HMAC for signing, making it susceptible to brute force attacks. To mitigate the risk, deployments should update to the latest helm chart, rotate session signing secrets, and upgrade to version 0.11.1. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
