Summary

CVE-2023-46813 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting Linux kernels prior to version 6.5.9. It allows users with MMIO (Memory-Mapped Input/Output) register access to potentially gain arbitrary write access to kernel memory. This occurs due to incorrect access checking in the Virtualization Control (VC) handler and the instruction emulation of MMIO accesses during SEV-ES (Secure Enablement for Virtualization) emulation. The vulnerability hinges on a race condition that enables userspace to replace an instruction before the VC handler reads it, thereby enabling the arbitrary write.
