Summary

CVE-2023-45814 is a vulnerability affecting the Bunkum open-source authentication service. In earlier versions, the `AuthenticationService` allowed caching of `IToken` objects along with associated `IUser` objects. With the introduction of permissions systems in Bunkum 4.0, `IToken`s were also injected into endpoints, leading to inadequate implementation of token-user relation management in the `AuthenticationService`. As a result, cached tokens could persist beyond their intended lifetimes, leading to use-after-free exceptions when those tokens were invalidated by downstream projects. The security impact is limited, as the vulnerability can only be exploited on a few endpoints under specific conditions and does not guarantee obtaining a specific token. The recommended solution is to upgrade to version 4.2.1, which addresses the issue by wiping the token cache after each request. No known workarounds exist for this vulnerability.
