Summary

CVE-2023-44392 is a vulnerability affecting Garden, a tool for automating Kubernetes development and testing. Prior to versions 0.13.17 (Bonsai) and 0.12.65 (Acorn), Garden utilized the cryo library, which contained an insecure deserialization implementation, leading to a code injection vulnerability. Garden caches test and run results using `ConfigMap` resources in Kubernetes, and attackers with access to the Kubernetes cluster can exploit this by injecting malicious objects into the `ConfigMap`. Users triggering `garden test` or `garden run` commands with previously cached results unwittingly deserialize these malicious objects, leading to remote code execution on their machines. Access to the Kubernetes cluster and previous usage of vulnerable Garden versions are necessary for an attacker to exploit this vulnerability, which has been mitigated through patches in versions 0.13.17 and 0.12.65. No known workarounds are available for older Garden versions.
