Summary

CVE-2023-43656 affects matrix-hookshot, a Matrix bot used for connecting to external services such as GitHub, GitLab, and JIRA. Instances with enabled transformation functions, specifically those containing `generic.allowJsTransformationFunctions` in their config, are vulnerable to an attack where the `vm2` sandbox can be broken out of. This issue primarily threatens users who allow untrusted users to apply their own transformation functions. Those with limited trusted users are still at risk, although the threat is reduced. Version 4.5.0 and newer of hookshot include a new sandbox library that should enhance security, and users are strongly urged to upgrade. For those unable to upgrade, disabling `generic.allowJsTransformationFunctions` in the config is advised.
