Summary
CVE-2023-43635 is a vulnerability affecting the EVE OS implementation of a "measured boot" mechanism designed to protect a sensitive "vault" directory. Instead of using SHA256 PCRs as assumed in the code, the key is sealed using outdated and insecure SHA1 PCRs. This oversight leads to two significant issues: first, machines without SHA1 PCRs enabled or those not sealing their keys at all will not effectively protect their "vault" directories. Second, the use of SHA1 reduces the complexity level required to unseal the key, making it easier for attackers to gain unauthorized access to the sensitive data. Consequently, an attacker can easily retrieve the contents of the "vault," rendering the "measured boot" mechanism ineffective.
