Summary

CVE-2023-42822 is a vulnerability affecting the xrdp open source remote desktop protocol server. The issue lies in the lack of bounds-checking on font glyph access in xrdp_painter.c, making it possible for users to trigger an out-of-bounds read within the xrdp executable. This vulnerability could potentially lead to an out-of-bounds write and might allow attackers to exploit the system if xrdp is running as root, which is common on non-Debian platforms. Users are recommended to upgrade to the patched release 0.9.23.1 to mitigate this risk. No known workarounds are available for this vulnerability.
