Summary

CVE-2023-42445 is a vulnerability affecting Gradle, a popular build automation tool. When Gradle processes XML files, it fails to disable the resolution of XML external entities by default. This issue, known as Out-of-Band XML External Entity (OOB-XXE), can enable an attacker to exfiltrate local text files to a remote server. Gradle processes XML files for various purposes, with Ivy XML descriptors and Maven POM files being the only ones fetched from external repositories and parsed. To mitigate this vulnerability, Gradle versions 7.6.3 and 8.4 have disabled XML external entity resolution for all use cases. Gradle now refuses to parse XML files containing XML external entities.
