Summary

CVE-2023-39347 affects Cilium, a networking, observability, and security solution that utilizes an eBPF-based dataplane. An attacker with Kubernetes API Server access can manipulate pod labels, causing Cilium to apply incorrect network policies. This issue arises during pod updates, where Cilium incorrectly relies on user-supplied labels to determine applicable policies. The vulnerability can bypass network policies based on namespaces, service accounts, or cluster constructs. Attackers can provide non-existent construct names, effectively disabling all affected policies. This issue has been resolved in Cilium versions 1.14.2, 1.13.7, and 1.12.14. As a temporary measure, users can employ an admission webhook to restrict pod label updates to specific keys.
