Summary

CVE-2023-38745 is a vulnerability in Pandoc versions before 3.1.6. It allows arbitrary file write, which can be triggered by supplying a crafted image element during file generation using the --extract-media option or when outputting to PDF format. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to create or overwrite arbitrary files, depending on the privileges of the Pandoc process. Notably, this issue stems from an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-35936, which involved insufficient accountability for double encoded path names. Systems that pass untrusted user input to Pandoc and allow its use to produce a PDF or with the --extract-media option are at risk.
