Summary

CVE-2023-38690 is a vulnerability affecting matrix-appservice-irc, a Node.js IRC bridge for Matrix. Prior to version 1.0.1, the IRC bridge did not properly parse commands with newlines. This issue allowed malicious users to pass a string of commands as a channel name, which would then be executed by the IRC bot. Version 1.0.1 and above of matrix-appservice-irc are patched, but there are no robust workarounds for unpatched systems. While disabling dynamic channels in the config can mitigate the most common attack vectors, other methods of exploitation may exist.
