Summary

CVE-2023-36849 is an Improper Check or Handling of Exceptional Conditions vulnerability affecting Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. An unauthenticated adjacent attacker can exploit this flaw by sending malformed LLDP packets to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) in the Layer-2 control protocols daemon (l2cpd). The impact includes l2cpd crashes and reinitialization of STP, MVRP, ERP, and possibly affected services like PoE or VoIP. This vulnerability affects several versions of Junos OS (21.4, 22.1, 22.2, and 22.3) and Junos OS Evolved (21.4-EVO, 22.1-EVO, 22.2-EVO, and 22.3-EVO). Continued reception of such packets will lead to a sustained DoS.
