Summary

CVE-2023-36807 is a vulnerability affecting version 2.10.5 of the pypdf library, a Python library used for splitting, merging, and transforming PDF files. An attacker can create a malicious PDF file that causes an infinite loop, consuming up to 100% of a single CPU core without impacting memory usage. Versions prior to 2.10.5 of the library will throw an error instead of hanging indefinitely. This issue has been addressed by pull request 1331, which is included in release 2.10.6. Users are strongly advised to upgrade to this version or modify the `PyPDF2/generic/_data_structures.py::read_object` function to throw an error, as detailed in GHSA-hm9v-vj3r-r55m.
