Summary

CVE-2023-36665 is a new prototype pollution vulnerability affecting protobuf.js, specifically versions 6.10.0 through 7.x before 7.2.5. Unlike the previously known CVE-2022-25878, this vulnerability enables an attacker to manipulate Object.prototype by adding and overwriting its data and functions through user-controlled protobuf messages. This can be exploited in various ways, such as parsing protobuf messages on the fly, loading .proto files using load/loadSync functions, or providing untrusted input to ReflectionObject.setParsedOption and util.setProperty functions. The impact of this vulnerability includes potential data leakage, code injection, and other unintended behavior.
