Summary

CVE-2023-36459 is a vulnerability affecting Mastodon, an open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. Before versions 3.5.9, 4.0.5, and 4.1.3, Mastodon failed to adequately sanitize oEmbed data. An attacker could exploit this flaw by crafting malicious oEmbed data, bypassing Mastodon's HTML sanitization, and injecting arbitrary HTML code. This creates a cross-site scripting (XSS) risk, allowing attackers to execute scripts in the user's browser when they click on a preview card for a malicious link. Versions 3.5.9, 4.0.5, and 4.1.3 have been released with patches to address this issue.
