Summary

CVE-2023-34253 affects the Grav content management system prior to version 1.7.42. The system introduced a denylist to prevent dangerous functions from being executed via template injection, but this list was found to be insufficient. Attackers could bypass the denylist using unsafe functions not banned, capitalized callable names, or fully-qualified names for referencing callables. As a result, a low-privileged attacker with access to the Grav Admin panel and page creation/update permissions could inject malicious templates to achieve remote code execution. Grav has since released version 1.7.42, which includes improvements to the denylist to mitigate this vulnerability.
