Summary

CVE-2023-34195 is a vulnerability affecting Insyde's InsydeH2O system firmware with kernel versions 5.0 to 5.5. The issue lies in the implementation of the GetImage method within SystemFirmwareManagementRuntimeDxe. This method retrieves the value of a runtime variable named GetImageProgress, which is later used as a function pointer. However, the variable is overwritten by the same module towards the end of the function. An attacker can exploit this by setting the UEFI variable from the OS to point to their custom code, thereby gaining arbitrary code execution in the DXE phase, prior to several chipset locks being established.
