Summary

CVE-2023-31096 is a newly discovered local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting Broadcom's LSI PCI-SV92EX Soft Modem Kernel Driver up to version 2.2.100.1 (AGRSM64.sys). An attacker can exploit this issue by triggering a stack overflow in RTLCopyMemory via an IOCTL 0x1b2150 request. By doing so, an attacker can elevate privileges from a medium-integrity process to the SYSTEM level. This vulnerability can be exploited to bypass kernel-level protections such as antivirus or PPL, allowing the attacker to run their code with high-integrity privileges, which can be used in coordinated bring your own vulnerable driver (BYOVD) ransomware campaigns.
