Summary

CVE-2023-20198 is a critical vulnerability in Cisco IOS XE Software with a CVSS score of 10.0. Attackers have been exploiting this issue to gain initial access through the web UI feature. Upon gaining access, they create a local user and password combination, enabling normal user login. The attackers then exploit another component of the web UI feature (CVE-2023-20273) to elevate privilege to root and write an implant to the file system. The investigation by Cisco has led to the identification of these two previously unknown vulnerabilities, which are now being tracked as CSCwh87343. CVE-2023-20273 has a CVSS score of 7.2. Both vulnerabilities have been addressed in updated releases, which are now available on the Cisco website.
