Summary

CVE-1999-1266 is an old vulnerability affecting the rsh daemon (rshd). This issue arises due to inconsistent error messages generated by rshd when processing valid versus invalid usernames. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by attempting to log in with various usernames and observing the error messages returned. By comparing the error messages, the attacker can determine which usernames are valid on the system, thereby gaining valuable information for further attacks. This vulnerability poses a significant security risk, as it allows unauthorized users to potentially gain access to the system.
