Summary
CVE-1999-0822 is a significant buffer overflow vulnerability affecting Qpopper (qpop) version 3.0. This issue, which allows remote root access, is caused by an error in the handling of AUTH commands. When a malicious user sends a specially crafted AUTH command, it can cause the buffer to overflow, leading to arbitrary code execution and ultimately granting the attacker root access to the system. This vulnerability poses a serious risk to systems using the affected version of Qpopper and requires immediate patching to mitigate the threat.
