Summary

CVE-1999-0679 is a buffer overflow vulnerability affecting the hybrid-6 IRC server, which was widely used on EFnet. An attacker can exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted m_invite message to a target user. If the server fails to properly manage the length of the message, it may result in a buffer overflow, leading the server to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the affected process. This vulnerability posed a significant risk to IRC networks using the hybrid-6 server, as it enabled remote attackers to gain control over the server and potentially compromise sensitive information.
