Summary
CVE-1999-0171 is a denial-of-service vulnerability affecting syslog, a widely used logging protocol. The vulnerability can be exploited by sending the syslog service a large number of superfluous messages, which can cause it to consume excessive system resources and crash, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by flooding the syslog service with unnecessary logs, rendering the system unavailable to legitimate users. This issue was first identified in 1999 and poses a significant risk to systems that use the vulnerable version of syslog. It is recommended that affected systems be updated to a patched version to mitigate this risk.
